TO THE BARRISTERS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN PHILIPPINES:

The Bar Exam is not an ordinary examination in school. It is, as its name tells, the bar -the standard in order to achieve the license to practice. However, this bar is also the mile one must cross should he or she desires to change the world. Lawyers change the world when they make love prevail over hatred, justice over injustice, duty over

expediency. We change the world by love and “love is the fulfilment of the law.” (Romans 13:10). Be motivated by this resolve and let your fervor be your source of inspiration.

I strongly believe and attest that this noble institution has prepared you to meet the demands of this day and I hinge my hopes in the fact that you have primed yourselves well in your own capacities for this moment. I believe in you and in your relentless quest for excellence. You too, must believe that you have prepared well enough and have spent a considerable amount of time out of love for this profession which you wish to attain.

This level of sacrifice merits success.

After being convinced that you have done your part well enough, surrender everything to God and allow him to be The One who will “will fight for you” (Deuteronomy 1:30) through the demands and battles of the days ahead.

In every journey or race, the homestretch is and will always prove the hardest. This is the law on attrition. The constant pressure and physical exhaustion, coupled with the stress brought by the Covid-19 pandemic, will wear you out, drain all your energy, shatter your determination and will into pieces and, in fact, at some point during the examinations, you will feel like quitting, but lo and behold, you have reached this far, a point where there is no more turning back. Continue surging forward with no surrender; regroup if necessary. Muster all your strength for the FINAL PUSH. Your determination today will define your place in the society for the rest of your life.

Future brethren in the profession, conquer your fear, be calm and enjoy your examinations. Remember that we need you to administer justice and fulfill our duties not only to our clients but also to the courts, the profession, and the public.

Your law school journey was the survival of the fittest. The mere fact that you were able to handle successfully and overcome the emotional and mental struggles of law school is a testament to your grit, dedication, and hard work. Let that jumpstart you in your pursuit of becoming a full-fledged lawyer. Always keep the end goal in mind. Hold on to what inspired and motivated you to reach this far. Have faith and believe in yourself. You are not there for no reason. Let your faith, dream, and passion drive you to achieve your goal.

Dear barristers, you suffered a lot of mind-twisting experiences in your law journeys like a lonely tree amid unending storms, like a thirsty chameleon that landed on a deserted island of sufferings and struggles. But it all makes sense when you face the last challenge to get the so-called A-T-T-Y dot; be guided by the shore of hope and power of faith, pray, believe, and trust in yourselves that you can defeat and hurdle the BAR Exam Dragon.

The only thing for you to do is to face it. So, believe in yourselves and go!
